Dear MSUNER Members,

I am excited to announce the Teachers As Scholars program for the 2007-2008 school year. The program provides MSUNER school teachers and administrators an opportunity to immerse themselves in scholarly topics and issues in small, liberal arts seminars offered by MSU faculty in the Arts and Sciences. All seminars are in two parts, and participants must attend both sessions. The seminars are offered free of charge to participating teachers and administrators and take place on the MSU campus. As you are aware, all of the MSUNER districts have endorsed this program, pledging to provide substitute coverage for teachers who wish to attend any of the eight seminars being offered.

This year’s seminar topics are:

Robinson and Doby: Civil Rights Pioneers before Rosa Parks
Culture through Film: Identities, Movements, and Transformations
Young Adult Literature and Theory: Perfect Together
English: A Tale of Two Languages
Evolutionary Biology
The Sixties
Gender and Identity in Spanish Film and Fiction
New Definitions of Religious Truth: Pluralist Theology

Take a look at the attached PDF for detailed descriptions of each seminar.

Please share this email with your district colleagues. All those interested in registering for a seminar(s) should complete the registration form at
http://chss.montclair.edu/TeachersAsScholars.html

For all seminars, breakfast and lunch will be served and parking passes for the Red Hawk Deck will be provided. All participants will be contacted by email with directions to the MSU campus and the seminar location.

Seating is limited and will be determined on a first come, first served basis.

I look forward to seeing you at a Teachers As Scholars Seminar this year!!

All my best,
Cheryl Hopper
Director, MSU Network for Educational Renewal

The Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal is offering the MSUNER Teacher Incentive Grant for the 2007-2008 school year. The purpose of this grant is to encourage teachers to enhance student learning. To accomplish this, a teacher can experiment with new teaching strategies, improve skills, develop a class project, etc. This grant is for a teacher who would like to work on a specific short-term project.

Projects will be funded in the range of $100 – $200, depending on the project. Funding will only be used for resources. The grant will give you a chance to try out a new initiative. If you think about it, you try out new ideas every year. Why not take this opportunity to receive some funding for your idea.

The Request for Proposals (RFP) outlines the requirements for Network funding. If you have any questions after reading this, please call Cheryl Hopper at 973-655-7641.

Proposals will be submitted electronically. There will be two submission dates for the 2007 – 2008 school year:
Early submission: proposals will be accepted through June 23, 2007, with notification of awards made by July 17, 2007.
Regular submission: proposals will be accepted through September 21, 2007, with notification of awards made by October 2, 2007.

We are offering two submission dates to accommodate everyone. If you already have an idea and want to work on it over the summer, the early submission date should be considered. If you think of an idea over the summer, you can apply in September.

A committee will review all proposals. Selection will be based on how strongly the project affects student learning and achievement. Grants will be distributed throughout the Network.

Proposal requirements:
Active Clinical Faculty status is required.
A brief written report will be due at the completion of the project, but no later than June 1, 2008. The report will include a log of expenditures and receipts.

Apply online at

The Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal promotes the simultaneous renewal of schools and the education of educators through a collaboration between and among Montclair State University and member school districts as equal partners. The Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal seeks to balance self-interest and selflessness in the provision of teacher preparation, professional development, curricular development and research. Through an emphasis on critical thinking, the Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal strives to provide the best possible education for all students, enabling them to make good judgments and to become contributing citizens in a social and political democracy.

Goal 1: We will move forward in our commitment to teaching for critical thinking as an educational ideal.

Goal 2: We will consider what it means to make a commitment for all teachers to work to enculturate the young as citizens in our political and social democracy and to examine the moral implications of teaching.

Goal 3: We will work to prepare teachers who see themselves as stewards of best practice and who understand the nature of change within the institutions in which they work.

Dear MSU Teacher Education Graduate,

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation and/or completion of the Teacher Education program! To provide support for you in your first years of teaching, we are inviting you to join our school university partnership, the Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal (MSUNER), as a MSUNER Associate.

MSU graduates who apply to become MSUNER Associates will have the opportunity to attend various professional development activities offered throughout the school year including the Summer Conference held every June. As you progress in your teaching career, you will have the opportunity to expand your teaching and leadership roles within the MSUNER to become a Clinical Faculty member with privileges such as being a cooperating teacher or on-site education mentor for student teachers, co-teaching student teaching seminars on campus or on-site, and teaching in the MSUNER professional development series.

The overarching themes of the teacher education program at MSU are embedded in the Agenda for Education in a Democracy, and include the enculturation of students into a political and social democracy, providing access to knowledge for all students, practicing pedagogical nurturing, and taking responsibility for stewardship of best practice in schools.

As a MSUNER Associate, you will receive support to bring the four dimensions of teaching into your classroom. So if you are an educator who practices teaching for critical thinking, sees yourself as a lifelong learner, and recognizes the moral dimensions of teaching, then make the move and apply to become a MSUNER Associate. The application can be accessed online at
